Lecturer Pool - Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering - College of Chemistry

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of parttime or fulltime qualified lecturers to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the department should an opening arise. The vibrant community of CBE is home to leading programs including an undergraduate program ranked #2 in the nation, US News and World Report; a graduate Ph.D program ranked #2 in the nation, US News and World Report 2018; and a graduate MS program specializing in product development. Our department is situated within the College of Chemistry, a small college within a large campus, with a connected and collegial feel. The College provides comprehensive student support services including peer tutoring, professional advising, career placement, and dropin counseling. Awardwinning student groups including chapters of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), American Cancer Society (ACS) and Chemical Engineering Car (ChemECar) enhance the student experience, and faculty members mentor students in clubs and teams in biofuels technology, cosmetics formulation, phytoremediation, and research projects.

We are seeking a dynamic lecturer with a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education in chemical engineering and to lead multiple courses each year. The pool will remain in place for one calendar year; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed; some appointments may begin in the 2020 spring semester. Positions range from 33% to 100%. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

General Duties:
Classroom/laboratory teaching and preparation, managing and mentoring graders and/or graduate student instructors (teaching assistants), holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and using Cal's electronic resources for course management.

Basic qualifications:
Completion of all Ph.D., or equivalent international degree, requirements, or have degree candidate status at the time of application.

Additional qualifications:
A Ph.D., or equivalent international degree, by the start date of the appointment.

Preferred qualifications:
Prior teaching experience is preferred.

The department is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching.

Applicants should provide contact information only for at least three but no more than five references. Application materials should be submitted electronically through our web-based system at: https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF02424.

We will only contact references for the finalists. All letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality (apo.berkeley.edu/ucb-confidentiality-policy) prior to submitting their letters.

The posting will remain open through November 2020 to accommodate upcoming course needs and new applicants. The pool will close in November 2020; if you would like to remain in the pool after that time you will need to submit a new application. Please direct questions to Jamie Eagan at jeagan@berkeley.edu.

Please note: The use of a lecturer pool does not guarantee that an open position exists. See the review date specified in AP Recruit to learn whether the department is currently reviewing applications for a specific position. If there is no future review date specified, your application may not be considered at this time.

UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is represented by the bargaining unit.
