Dr. Mustafa Gül, from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta, is seeking expressions of interest from potential postdoctoral fellows for future opportunities at the SuRe Cities Lab. The research focus may include the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning to wildland urban interface fire risk assessment or building energy management.
POTENTIAL AREAS OF INVOLVEMENT
• Develop, implement, and evaluate advanced machine learning and deep learning models, working with large datasets, simulation tools, and computational frameworks.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including researchers and industry partners, to ensure the successful execution of project goals.
• Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
• Prepare high-quality research publications and presentations to share findings with academic and professional communities.
• Contribute to the preparation of grant proposals and funding applications.
QUALIFICATIONS
(1) Education Background: Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Geomatics, or a related field.
(2) Technical Skills:
• Strong expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and AI, with demonstrated experience applying these methods to research projects.
• Proficiency in Python and relevant libraries for machine learning, deep learning, data manipulation, and visualization.
• Experience with large-scale scientific computations, high-performance computing, parallel computing, and GPU-accelerated environments.
• Solid publication and presentation record in relevant fields.
• (Optional) Experience with remote sensing, GIS, LiDAR, mobile mapping, drones, satellite imagery, or GNSS systems.
• (Optional) Experience applying AI or data-driven methods to optimize energy performance in buildings, particularly in the context of renewable energy systems.
(3) Leadership and Organizational Skills:
• Experience and interest in mentoring and training students as part of a cross-disciplinary research team.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating leadership qualities, effective collaboration with partners, and the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to present to a wide range of audiences.
• Experience in proposal development and grant writing.
