KU Leuven has a full-time academic vacancy in the domain of lighting technology at the Technology Campus Ghent. We are looking for internationally orientated candidates with an excellent research record and with educational competencies within the field of lighting technology, strongly focussed on hard and soft lighting metrology. Outside of the classical physical and optical metrology ("hard" metrology), there is a large field of measurement, relating human perceptual to associated physical attributes. This domain is referred to as "soft " metrology by analogy with hard and soft sciences.
The successful applicant will be appointed in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the Science, Engineering and Technology Group of KU Leuven.
The faculty of Engineering Technology has an extensive national and international network, both in the academic and business world.
The Light&Lighting Laboratory research group can build upon a solid research infrastructure, an extensive international network, connections with companies and non-profit organisations, a stable offer of highly talented PhD students and a supportive work environment. The research topics are interior lighting, optical design, lighting metrology and appearance of materials. International recognition has been established through activities within CIE (International Commission on Illumination) and by publications in highly ranked journals. Cooperation exists with several universities and with research and national metrology institutes (NIST, LNE-CNAM, PTB).

DUTIES
Research

In your position, you develop a research programme at an international level in the field of hard and soft lighting metrology. Possible research lines in hard metrology include, amongst others, the intelligent use of camera-based systems (hyperspectral imaging), photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), photobiological safety, and near-field goniophotometry. Research lines in soft metrology might include the development of new measuring approaches of perceptual quantities such as gloss, distinctness-of-image, glare, and other perceptual attributes connected to lighting, as well as the development of prototypes of innovative measuring instruments.
You strengthen existing research lines and provide complementary expertise.
You engage in targeted scientific research, resulting in PhD’s and publications that meet international standards and lead to broad international recognition.
You initiate and support a network of companies through the valorisation of research results and by delivering qualitative industrial services, strengthening industrial innovation. This includes also consolidation and refinement of in-house traceability and quality of testing.
As part of your research programme, you develop international partnerships, within the academic world as well as with industrial partners.
You are able to acquire competitive funding, both project-based government funding as well as industrial funding.
You strive for excellence and thus contribute to the further development of the research group and the faculty.
You pay attention to the technology transfer and application of the results of your research in industry/government/society.

Education

You provide high-quality education for both bachelor and master students in the field of Engineering Technology, in particular in the Master programs of Electronics-ICT, Energy and IMLEX, with a clear commitment to the quality of the programme as a whole. On the longer term, all professors are expected to teach a few undergraduate courses (such as Mathematics and Physics) in Dutch.
You contribute to the faculty’s and the university’s pedagogical project through the supervision of student projects (for example bachelor’s and master’s theses) and by acting as a promotor of PhD students.
You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuven’s view on activating and researched-based education and make use of the possibilities for educational professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.

Service

Besides emphasizing on internationally renowned research, the Light&Lighting Laboratory research group has built up a strong reputation within the field of industrial innovation support. Collaboration with industrial partners focusses on high-quality lighting metrology services (radiometry, photometry, colorimetry) and innovation support through industry-focused applied research projects.
You are expected to further develop and to improve the quality of the lighting metrology services, and to strengthen the industrial network by maintaining close contact with the local industry, the scientific community, and society.
Research shall be predominantly application-oriented with a focus on the translation of research findings into practical applications beneficial to society. You shall therefore establish a network of industrial partners and new joint research projects.
Finally, you play an active part in promoting the Faculty of Engineering Technology towards new students and the wider professional field by participating in open days, networking events and fairs,…

PROFILE

You have a PhD in Engineering Science, Engineering Technology or Sciences.
You have a strong research track record in the discipline, evidenced by your publications or by your research experience in industry. You have the ambition to contribute to excellent research and to the valorisation in industry and in society. International experience is an important advantage.
You have verifiable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You have proven leadership competencies in a university or industry context.
A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.
The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of your employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings and to acquire the level of Dutch that is required for tenure.
Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch resp. English to the required standard.
