ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY: The University of Alabama in Huntsville, classified as a High Research Active institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, offers academic and research programs in the Colleges of Engineering, Nursing, Education, Science, Business, Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Professional and Continuing Studies. Huntsville maintains one of the highest per capita incomes and standards of living in the Southeast and is home to many aerospace and high technology research corporations. ABOUT THE COLLEGE: The College of Engineering (COE) enrolls nearly 35% of UAH’s undergraduates in ABET-accredited programs in aerospace, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial and systems, mechanical, and optical engineering. Research addresses three Grand Challenges from the National Academy of Engineering: secure cyberspace, restore and improve urban infrastructure, and engineer tools of scientific discovery. The COE has made recent investments in materials engineering, energy storage, cybersecurity, and systems engineering.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Chemical and Materials Engineering Department has four tenured/tenure track faculty with research strengths spanning materials science/engineering and biotechnology. Active research projects involve thermodynamics and mechanical properties of materials, catalysis, nanostructured materials for energy conversion and storage, biomaterials, biomolecular and cellular engineering, and immunoengineering. Faculty funding sources have included federal sources such as the MDA, NSF, ACS-PRF, and industrial sources including CFD Research Corporation, Dow Corning and Polaris Sensor Technologies. The Department offers BS and MSE degrees in Chemical Engineering. For the PhD Degree, CME students have three pathways including two interdisciplinary programs in Materials Science, and Biotechnology Science and Engineering, and the Chemical Engineering option through the Mechanical Engineering program. Students in the Biotechnology PhD program can pursue their PhD dissertation projects working with scientists at the Hudson-Alpha Institute for Biotechnology. The CME department has approximately 230 undergraduate students and 10 graduate students. At the undergraduate level, the CME department offers students the opportunity to pursue a two elective sequence in polymer engineering and applied materials engineering and/or bioprocessing and bioseparations. In addition, all students in the CME department take a course that introduces them to a molecular understanding of biological systems.

JOB DESCRIPTION/REQUIREMENTS: The successful individual should have an established research and teaching record in any area within chemical engineering including but not limited to one or more of the following areas – fluid mechanics, transport processes, modeling and simulation, process design including software development, catalysis, materials such as polymers, biomaterials, and energy materials. The successful candidate must be willing to and have demonstrated experience to help create and advance innovative ideas that cross disciplinary lines and impact chemical engineering education and research. We seek candidates who can inspire and lead funded research and scholarship, enable student success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels through teaching and mentoring, and contribute proactively to university and professional service while contributing to the diversity of the UAH academic community. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in chemical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline to warrant appointment as a tenured professor in the department. The chair reports to the dean of the College, and is responsible for the administration of all programs and budgets in the department.
