Nominations and applications are being solicited for the position of Chair and Full Professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Kansas (KUME). Candidates should have demonstrated intellectual leadership and management skills to continue the department’s rapid growth of research and scholarship. KUME is seeking a dynamic individual to strategically lead and grow excellence in the on-going expansion of the interdisciplinary research thrusts associated with KUME, including bioengineering, sustainable energy, and transportation, while maintaining traditional core strengths in mechanical engineering. Further development of strong partnerships with other academic institutions, national labs, and industry is also a goal.
Candidates are sought who have an earned doctorate in mechanical engineering, or a closely related field, and to be appointable at the rank of full professor. The successful candidate should be results oriented, have achieved distinction in university-level teaching and research and have a record of superior scholarship, externally funded research, administrative ability, and academic leadership at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, candidates should have a record of strong commitment to broadening the participation of women and minorities in engineering. The Chair appointment is for an initial term of five years with the possibility of renewal, and serves at the pleasure of the Dean of the School of Engineering.
Since 2012, the KU School of Engineering and the state of Kansas have continued to invest in our Building on Excellence Initiative, which includes 30 new engineering faculty, four new engineering buildings, and significant increases in both graduate and undergraduate enrollment. In addition, KU has made recent infrastructure investments of over $370M in four state-of-the-art ~600,000 sq ft complexes having interdisciplinary ties with engineering. KUME currently has 20 tenured/tenure track faculty and over 500 students, with programs leading to bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees. KUME offers a robust industry sponsored capstone program as well as support of innovation and collaboration through student experiential learning and interdisciplinary cooperation. 60% – Administration and Service.
Responsible for administration of all programs of the Department, including budgetary control. Working with faculty, staff, and students to maintain existing outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs as well as fostering research efforts of the highest quality, which includes administering the Department, mentoring and leading faculty, strategic planning, recruiting faculty and students, as well as representing the Department to the various constituents of alumni, business, and government. Provide service to the profession, University, School, and Department.
20% – Research
Work with the faculty to increase research funding in all areas of the Department. Conduct scholarly and externally funded research.
20% – Teach
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Mechanical Engineering and associated disciplines.
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., (3) record of accomplishments addressed in teaching portfolio, coursework and/or publications, research publications, or conference publications,:
1. Earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or a closely-related field
2. Demonstrated nationally/internationally recognized active research program in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
3. Demonstrated nationally or internationally recognized expertise in Mechanical Engineering.
4. Exceptional record of teaching, research and service commensurate with the rank of full professor at the University of Kansas.
5. Demonstrate a progressive vision for leadership in the Mechanical Engineering Department.
